S4 Course Description

Millburn Academy Music Department

S.4 Course Outline

Pupils focus on the following units:

1) Performing Skills. At each national level pupils require to perform an eight minute programme split between two instruments. Pupils require to play at least two pieces on each instrument and must play for a minimum of two minutes and a maximum of six minutes on each instrument. Pupils should also demonstrate an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of their performance and be able to identify strategies for improving their performances.

At National 5 level this is assessed by playing to an external examiner, at National 3 & 4 by recording their performances which are assessed internally by the music department.

2) Compositional Skills: Pupils are asked to complete one composition using a selection of level related concepts for the level that the pupil is sitting. Pupils may also keep a log/folio of various compositional skills that they have used in their musical journey and in the work of other composers. E.g. Mozart’s use of ornamentation, etc. Pupils should also demonstrate the ability to reflect on their work and suggest improvements that they could make to their compositions.

Compositions/folios are marked internally by the department which may then be verified by S.Q.A.

3) Understanding Music: Pupils require to gain an understanding of level related musical concepts and musical literacy. This is achieved by covering the required concepts in thematic groupings. Pupils also require to show evidence that they have an awareness of the prevalent influences that culture has had on music at certain times.

All pupils are tested by means of an exam paper but at National 5 pupils have to also sit an external paper which is marked centrally by the S.Q.A.
